The
Little School That Thinks Big The
Unveiling Ceremony of the Newly Renovated Hellenic American School Library
Dedicated to Ourania Behrakis LOWELL,
MA
- December 9, 2003 - A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Hellenic American
School will take place on January 9, 2004 in honor of the newly renovated
library dedicated to Ms. Ourania Behrakis. The Hellenic American School is
a small private elementary school with a big history in the heart of
Lowell, Massachusetts' ethnic community. Opened in 1908 by Greek
immigrants, it was the first Greek Orthodox day school in the United
States with the goal of providing the highest quality education enriched
with the teaching of the Greek language, history and culture. For nearly
one hundred years, the school has offered a preschool and kindergarten
program that is designed to allow children to develop at their
individual rate and a grade 1 through 6 program that features a
challenging broad based curriculum with emphasis on language arts,
mathematics, science, geography, social studies, computers, music,
physical education, and art. The achievements of the school's alumni and
excellent Terra Nova test scores attest to the school's high standards for
academic excellence. "
Lowell is proud to have such a forward thinking, academically excellent
institution," says Mayor Rita Mercier. "We think of the
Hellenic American School as a jewel in the heart of our multi-ethnic
community." The
newly renovated library media center will play a critical role in the
introduction of new learning technologies, support of the curriculum, and
the teaching of information skills. The library will be electronically
linked to the Merrimack library Consortium and equipped with the latest in
information networking technologies necessary to meet the needs of today's
learners. "
At the Hellenic American School, we know our students as individuals, we
know their families and their parents," says Principal Dr. James
Demos. " We want every boy and girl in the school to have
self-confidence, security and pride. Our aim is to help nurture the
talents in each pupil and help them reach their full potential." The
Hellenic American School believes that it needs to prepare students for
the future. This endeavor is achieved through the dedicated and committed
work of principal Dr. James Demos, state certified teachers, staff, the
school board, and parents. The Hellenic American School is steadfast to
meet imminent challenges and help students become productive and
responsible participants in a rapidly changing global society. The
unveiling ceremony will take place on January 9, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. at the
Hellenic American School located at 41 Broadway Street in Lowell. A
cocktail reception at the Whistler House for two hundred invited guests
will immediately follow the ceremony. The Hellenic American School is
