INTER-RELIGIOUS CONFERENCE FOR SOUTHEAST EUROPE

 
TIRANA, Nov 21 (FENA/KTA) – Inter-religious Conference for Southeast Europe on the topic “Improvement of Peace and Stability Through Regional Cooperation” was held in Tirana from 16 to 19 November.

Organizers of the conference were World Conference for Peace (WCRP) and NGO World Learning, while those who took part in the conference are representatives of Islamic community, Orthodox Church, and Catholic Church from Albania, Serbia and Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, and BiH as well as representatives of Bektasi community from Albania, Jewish Community from BiH, and representatives of networks of women from the mentioned countries.

Religious representatives from BiH spoke on the situation in the country as well as on the role of their dignitaries on creating of reconciliation and trust climate. Mr Asim Zupčević presented as to how Constitution of BiH and Dayton Agreement define human rights and rights of Churches and religious communities. He also referred to the law on freedom of religion, as well as to legal position of Churches and religious communities.

Secretary general of the BiH Bishops’ Conference , Msgr Ivo Tomašević, spoke on the roles of religious dignitaries before, during, and after war, pointing out that politics has the most important and central role, i.e. representatives of political bodies, who on regular basis are eager to use representatives of a Church or religious community for implementation of their plans.

Msgr Tomašević pointed out importance of a just state-legal organization of BiH, for which bishops from BiH gave a concrete proposal. Religious teaching in schools and opening of private schools were also discussed on the occasion.

At the end of the conference a joint statement was harmonized in which the religious representatives support and encourage one another in promoting of inter-religious dialog and establishing of inter- religious councils which would support overcoming of conflicts, building up of peace, and development. Among others, local and international political factors are called upon to create both in BiH and in other countries, such a legal system under which every ethnic group would be equal, an which would ensure equal rights and possibilities for every citizen to live in his/her full national, religious and cultural identity.
