WASHINGTON, D.C. With the considerable record of more than 65
years serving the church in choir service and
other volunteer services for the Greek Orthodox
Church, Katherine Panagos was awarded the esteemed
Patriarch Athenagoras Medal at the recent New
Jersey Diocese Choir Conference. This was held at the 3-day conference in Norfolk, Virginia and was
bestowed by Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey. Katherine joined the Milwaukee Annunciation choir at 11 years of
age and later served as its director when the
previous choir director went to serve in the army
in World War II. With every career move of
husband, Victor Panagos, she served the needs of
the local church. She was a choir member and organist with the Annunciation Church of
Kansas City, Missouri; choir director and organist
for the St. Sophia Church in Syracuse, New York;
and choir director and organist for St. Demetrios
Church in Daytona Beach, Florida. For the past 32
years, Katherine has been serving at St. George
Church in Bethesda, Maryland as principal organist
and director of the same choir. Mrs. Panagos studied at Milwaukee Downer College in Milwaukee,
Wisconsin where she earned her degree in Teaching
and Home Economics. The Athenagoras Medal was
established in 1996 to recognize the meritorious
service of individuals whose contributions to the
Churchs music ministry are worthy of
distinction.
