It
was a little over six months ago that the late
Archbishop Iakovos passed away. Had he lived, he
would have celebrated, as he always did, his
nameday last Sunday, October 23, the feast day of
Saint James (Iakovos). There
are a number of Greek Americans who have
distinguished themselves in the American
landscape. But given the way our community
operates, where only the clergy gets paid and
everybody else is a volunteer, our leaders often
come from the ranks of the Church hierarchy. In this context, Iakovos was the first authentic Greek American leader – a leader who was the unquestionable voice and representative of the community. He was its spokesman, a leader who, by the sheer force of his personality, put this community on the map. May his memory be eternal.
