Gorbachev honored for his contributions to religious and other freedoms in Russia

 
President of the former Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev received the Athenagoras Human Rights Award during the Order of Saint’s annual banquet at the New York last Saturday, October 22. Mr. Gorbachev, a baptized Russian Orthodox Christian, was honored with the title of Archon Grand Orator (Megas Rhetor) of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

Archbishop Demetrios of America represented Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople. Also present were former CIA Director George Tenet, who was the evening’s master of ceremonies and Archons National Commander Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis.
