Philoptochos Should Help Retired Priests

To the Editor:

I was distressed to read the article that was published in your last issue on our poverty stricken retired priests and widowed presbyteras. Such a situation is unacceptable no matter how much our Archdiocese may be in debt. Proper remedial action must be taken immediately to alleviate this situation and to establish necessary safeguards so that this will not happen again. In the meantime, until proper alternative arrangements are made – and although I do not accept that retired priests and widowed presbyteras should be among those whom it is necessary for the Philoptochos to assist – the local, Diocesan or National Philoptochos should come to their aid.
