Kenilworth,
New Jersey – His Eminence
Metropolitan Evangelos of New Jersey hosted, for
the first time in the history of the Metropolis
of New Jersey, an elegant reception at the
Metropolis Headquarters in Kenilworth, New
Jersey, on Tuesday, October 11, 2005, to mark
the New Ecclesiastical Year and in particular,
the new academic year for Greek Education.
At the invitation of His Eminence, Clergy,
Parish Council Presidents, Directors and Faculty
of the Metropolis Greek Afternoon Schools and
Presidents of the School Committees gathered in
a festive atmosphere for an evening filled with
fellowship and camaraderie in the effort to
better Greek Education in the Holy Metropolis of
New Jersey.
His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos presided
over the Agiasmos service held to bless the New
Ecclesiastical and Academic Year. His Eminence
was assisted by the Chancellor of the
Metropolis, Rev. Protopresbyter Anargyros
Stavropoulos, V. Rev. Archimandrite George Nikas,
Chief Secretary of the Metropolis and Mr.
Hippocratis Polemis, Protopsaltis of the
Metropolitan Cathedral of St. John the
Theologian in Tenafly, NJ. Following the
service, His Eminence blessed all of those
present, praying that the forthcoming academic
year be one of unprecedented progress and
quality.
In his remarks, Metropolitan Evangelos stressed
the paramount importance that Greek Education
holds in the life of the Orthodox Church and in
particular, in the lives of our children.
Welcoming especially the Greek Afternoon School
Teachers, with much paternal love and
enthusiasm, His Eminence reminded all that their
task of educating our young people was a sacred
and noble one. Our Hellenic Orthodox education,
language and traditions can only be transmitted
from one generation to the next through a strong
and deep background in the minds and hearts of
today’s generation of children.
At the initiative of His Eminence, another
gathering will soon be held for the sole purpose
of discussing the various issues affecting Greek
Education and its harmonious implementation
within the Holy Metropolis of New Jersey. All
present overwhelmingly embraced His Eminence’s
initiative and look forward with much
anticipation to the next opportunity to discuss
the many facets of Greek Education as it affects
our young people and the future of our Hellenic
Orthodox Heritage.
