KEVIN FRAYER/AP
Patriarch
Theofilos of Jerusalem said yesterday that the
Orthodox Church is investigating the full extent
of the land deals that the deposed patriarch,
Irenaios, made with Jewish investors. The
long-term lease of two properties in
Jerusalems Old City to Jewish groups had
proved the undoing of Irenaios, who was ousted
in May and replaced in August by Theofilos.
We are in the process of finding out exactly
what is going on with all property issues, the
new patriarch told The Associated Press, adding
that he would oppose the leasing of the
properties.
