The Orthodox Christian Association of Medicine,
Psychology, and Religion (OCAMPR) is dedicating
this year's annual conference to the
interdisciplinary exploration of Cancer: The
Power of Faith & Prayer from October 28 - 29
on the scenic campus of Hellenic College/Holy
Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology
(Brookline, MA).
This informative and timely conference features
Brother Charles Anthony of the Monastery Center
for Disease Prevention, Panagia Philantropini in
Ormylia, Greece as the keynote speaker. This
center is committed to serving the needy
neighbor by offering such ministries as medical
care, public health, and scientific research. At
the Center of Panagia Philanthropini, annually
more than 18,000 persons undergo cancer early
detection and screening examinations. Over
36,000 persons participate in health educational
programs at the Center, whereas more than 50,000
locals and 200,000 tourists are reached through
multi-media health educational materials and
television and radio broadcasts developed by the
Center. All services are rendered completely
free of charge and are offered without
preference to race, religion, gender, or creed.
The conference's plenary sessions feature a
diverse group of experts each addressing an
aspect of healing. The speakers include
Panagiotis Anastasiadis, Ph.D. presenting on
cancer research (MAYO Clinic); Georgia
Photopoulos, cancer survivor, author, and
columnist; and Roxanne Louh, Ph.D., discussing
Scarring, Disfigurement, Body Image and the
Healing Power of Faith and Prayer. An
interdisciplinary group will address the case
study, Mary, a Young Mother Recently Diagnosed
with Breast Cancer. The conference will close
with its annual dinner banquet. This year's
dinner speaker is Rev. Elias Kyprianos
Bouboutsis, Ph.D. who is Professor of Greek,
Sociology, and Ritual Studies at the Florida
Center for Theological Studies in Miami. His
topic is Infirmity and Healing in Orthodox Folk
Religion.
OCAMPR exists to foster interdisciplinary
dialogue and promote Christian fellowship among
helping professionals in medicine, psychology
and religion. Members pursue an understanding of
the whole person, which integrates the basic
assumptions of medicine, psychology and religion
with the Orthodox Christian faith in educating
and serving Church and community.
A conference brochure and registration form as
well as more information can be found on
