Jersey City, NJ: Sts. Peter and Paul Church, less than a mile from the WTC disaster site, was the scene of a benefit concert by the Spirit of Orthodoxy Choir on Sunday, September 11, 2005, the fourth anniversary of the terrorist attack. Directed by Aleksei V. Shipovalnikov, the choir presented “Music of Remembrance and Hope” to benefit the Jersey City Firefighters’ Distress Fund and the IOCC Hurricane Katrina Relief effort. An Honor Guard from the Fire Department stood at attention outside the church to welcome the substantial and highly receptive audience. The thirty-member choir sang works by Glinka, Tavener, Chesnokov and others, focusing on penitential and Paschal music. Donations received of approximately $1350 for the assistance of the Jersey City Firefighters’ Distress Fund and for the work of International Orthodox Christian Charities as it aids the victims of Hurricane Katrina are very encouraging. And even more encouraging is to know that parishes throughout the Church were sharing in a variety of ways to remember and assist the needy. Let us remember the words of St. Augustine: “I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands that I still possess.” The Choir will sing in concert next at St. Mary’s Orthodox Church, Coaldale, PA, on Sunday, October 23, at 5pm. www.spiritoforthodoxy.com
