To the Editor: I am sure whether the vast majority, if not all, of your readers were saddened by Ted Kalmoukos’ article in your July 2 edition, "Archdiocese Plans to Cut Expenses, Will Fire Employees." The severe financial condition which our Archdiocese finds itself in, gives credit to none of us. The reason is hardly a secret. Most of us continue to contribute no more than 1 percent of our annual income toward the needs of our parish, Metropolis or Archdiocese, an amount which simply does not cut it. During last year’s Clergy-Laity Congress, the issue of individual contributions for parish, Metropolis and Archdiocese needs was extensively debated. But rather than approaching this issue realistically, the Congress recommended stewardship contributions from parishioners to the tune of 10 percent of their annual income, citing as justification the 10 percent level in Holy Scripture. Clearly, an infinitesimally small number of our parishioners are willing and able to meet such a requirement. A much smaller percentage (perhaps 2-4 percent of one’s annual income), applied uniformly, would go a long way toward raising the necessary funds in support of Parish, Metropolis and Archdiocesan needs.
Respectfully submitted,
