A Christian
Orthodox Priest Explores the Issues
Wednesday, September 21, 2005. 6:30pm
Vespers/7:00pm Lecture
GUEST SPEAKER: Rev. Steven Tsichlis
6 September
2005. Seattle, Kenmore, Wash. Holy Apostles
Greek Orthodox
Church will present noted speaker Father Steven
Tsichlis from Irvine, California, for a lecture
on Dan Brown's novel, The DaVinci Code, from an
Eastern Orthodox perspective. This is the first
lecture in a series "Responding to 21st Century
Issues." The lecture will take place at the
Church of the Redeemer in Kenmore, conveniently
located at the top of Lake Washington, on
Wednesday, September 21, 2005, beginning with
Small Vespers at 6:30pm and the lecture at
7:00pm.
Fr. Steven Tsichlis is pastor of St. Paul's
Greek Orthodox Church in Irvine, California. A
parish of over 1,000 families located in the
shadow of Hollywood and Disneyland, The Da Vinci
Code is no less popular there than in the rest
of the world.
From an earlier lecture by Rev. Tsichlis: "...
Author Dan Brown knows little about Leonardo,
little about art and virtually nothing about
Jesus, the Bible and Christian history... [Brown
claims that] the marriage of Jesus and Mary
Magdalene is a matter of historical fact... and
that the bones of Mary Magdalene are buried in
the Louvre."
"Mary Magdalene died in the city of Ephesus and
was buried there. Her body, an object of
veneration by Christians, was transferred to
Constantinople in the 9th century by the
Byzantine emperor Leo the Wise, an event that is
still commemorated each year on May 4th.
Following the sack of Constantinople by the
Crusaders in 1204, most of her relics were
carried back to Rome and placed under the altar
in the Lateran Palace (the
papal chapel). Some of her relics are located in
Vezelay, a small town near Marseilles in France,
and are housed in St. Maximin's Basilica. Her [undecayed]
arm is kept at the Monastery of Simonos Petra on
Mt. Athos."
Father Steven Tsichlis holds a B.A. in history
and philosophy; received a certificate of
studies from the University of Thessaloniki in
Greek and Byzantine History in 1977; graduated
from Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of
Theology in Brookline, MA with a Masters of
Divinity in 1978; graduated from Yale Divinity
School with an S.T.M. in 1981; and pursued a
doctorate in patristics with the late Father
John Meyendorff at Fordham University in New
York.
Seattleites will know him as the long-time
former pastor of Assumption Greek Orthodox
Church on Capitol Hill, Seattle. While in
Seattle he served as Orthodox ecumenical
representative to the Church Council of Greater
Seattle; a member of the Seattle/St. Petersburg
(Russia) sister churches program; and was
instrumental in founding the St. John the
Almsgiver Ministry, a pan-Orthodox program to
feed the homeless in Seattle. In 1997, he was
assigned as pastor of the Church of St. Paul in
Irvine, California.
With 250 million followers worldwide, the
Eastern Orthodox Church is the second largest
Christian body in the world and traces its roots
directly to the Holy Apostles and the Early
Church. Orthodoxy (lit. "right glory") holds
biblical Scripture and tradition, guided by the
Holy Spirit as expressed in the consciousness of
the entire Orthodox community, to be the source
of faith, worship, and spirituality.
