To the Editor: Christianity survived a long time ago because people with convictions continually made sacrifices to protect, preserve and defend a faith they inherited from the Apostles. It seems that, at present, our religious leaders, rather than concentrating on religion, are either caught up in material things, or in a stage of religious dictatorial blackout with reality and using religion as a weapon. In reference to Mr. Kalmoukos article in your August 13 edition ("Collis Alarmed About Archdiocese Fiscal State"), it takes people like Dr. John Collis to step up to the plate and have the courage to try to address the serious problems facing Greek Orthodoxy in America and do something about it. It is yet another wakeup call to remind the clergy that people are followers, and not slaves, to a faith. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all the faithful to speak out, loud and clear, that our religious leaders should go back to basics on religion, and practice what they have inherited from the Apostles: that is, to be preachers not dictators. Greek Orthodoxy will only survive in this Country if democratic principles are followed and not ignored. It is a wonderful and encouraging thing that your newspaper is enlightening its readers on the religious issues from all aspects. Thank you.
