Father Nicholas John Capilos, 50, Dies Suddenly

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — Father Nicholas John Capilos, parish priest at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Chattanooga for the past two years, died suddenly Thursday, August 25, 2005. He was 50 years old.

Father Nick had endeared himself to the community by leading with the knowledge of experience and above all, a heart and mind imbued with a passion of love for all people. This was made evident by his first choice of quotes to the community as their new parish priest:

“My heart has only entrances. Whoever enters it remains there. No matter what he does I will always love him and pray for his salvation.”

Father Nick Capilos was born in southern Greece and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, by his parents, John and Chrisula Capilos. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Restaurant and Hotel Management and General Studies from the University of South Carolina. He then attended Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology and graduated in 1982 with a master’s degree in Divinity. Father Nick was ordained to the Holy Deaconate, and shortly afterwards to the Holy Priesthood by the hand of Bishop John of Atlanta in 1983. Father Nick had been assigned to several parishes, serving in Durham, NC, Nashville, TN, Augusta, GA, Savannah, GA, and also had served at the Ionian Village summer camp in Greece.

He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Avgerinos Capilos, sons, John and George Capilos, all of Chattanooga; parents, John and Chrisula Capilos, sister, Elaina Capilos, all of Columbia, SC; and nephew, Jim Paradeses.

At Annunciation Church in Chattanooga, a viewing will be held Sunday, August 28 from 4 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with a Trisagion Prayer Service to be held at 7 p.m. A memorial reception will follow in the Parish Hall.

Matins Service will be held Monday, August 29 at 8:15 a.m., a Divine Liturgy will be held at 9 a.m. and a Trisagion Prayer Service will begin at 10:30 a.m. presided by Metropolitan Nicholas of Detroit assisted by Metropolitan Alexios and Bishop Savas, all at Annunciation Church in Chattanooga. A memorial reception will be offered by Philoptochos in the Parish Hall.

Father Nick will be carried to Columbia, South Carolina, for a viewing Monday from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with a Trisagion Prayer Service to be held at 8 p.m. Matins Service will begin at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Divine Liturgy at 9 a.m. and funeral services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow the services in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, Columbia, is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, Renovation Fund, 722 Glenwood Drive, Chattanooga TN 37404.
