InterOrthodox Press Publishes Two New Titles, Launches On-line Store

Berkeley, CA – InterOrthodox Press, the publishing arm of the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute, has just published two new books. The first book, “One Calling in Christ,” focuses attention on the laity in the Church. It examines the topic from various perspectives, including patristic, historical and liturgical.

“One Calling in Christ: The Laity in the Orthodox Church” contains Articles about the Tenure of Archbishop Spyridon and Lawsuits.

The book also looks at two controversial areas involving the laity. One article discusses the 1996-1999 tenure of Archbishop Spyridon in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese, while the second discusses the ability of laity to take an archdiocese to court, focusing on the recent court case between members of Orthodox Christian Laity and the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.

The chapters of the book are the papers and responses from the 2004 annual meeting of the Orthodox Theological Society in America. The contents of the books are as follows:

“Patristic Understandings of the Laity and Holiness” by Helen Creticos Theodoropoulos.

“Educating Laity: Ideas on the Present, Past and Future of Orthodox Christian Religious Education in the United States” by Ann Mitsakos Bezzerides.

“Priesthoods and Pieties: Orthodoxy and the Post-Reformation Laos” by A. Gregg Roeber with a response by Robert M. Arida.

“Unexpected Consequences: The Revolt Against Archbishop Spyridon in the Greek Archdiocese of America, 1996-99” by Andrew Walsh with a response by Anton C. Vrame.

“Canonical Perspectives on the Position of the Laity” by Patrick Viscuso with a response by Lewis J. Patsavos.

“Liturgical Perspectives on the Laity” by John Klentos with a response by Kyriaki Karidoyanes FitzGerald.

“The Church in the Modern World” Examines Environment, Person-centered Society, and Church State Issues.

The second new book is titled, “The Church in the Modern World” by Stavros Fotiou. The book explores three areas facing the contemporary modern Church, the challenge of a person-centered society, Church-State relations, and the environment. John Zizioulas, Metropolitan of Pergamon, called this book “an excellent discussion of some of the most crucial issues facing the Church…. Throughout the discussion of these issues the true spirit of Orthodox tradition and theology is evident.” Stavros Fotiou is Associate Professor of Theology and Christian Education at the University of Cyprus.

The books are available through various sources, including Amazon.com and the Institute’s on-line bookstore, which has just been launched. The Institute’s online store makes available all five titles of InterOrthodox Press. The store can be accessed from the Institute’s website – www.orthodoxinstitute.org.

The Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute is an educational center in Berkeley, California affiliated with the Graduate Theological Union. The PAOI offers the Master of Arts in Orthodox Christian Studies at the GTU, the only graduate degree program in Orthodox studies in the western United States. The PAOI hosts the Orthodox Christian Fellowship at the University of California, Berkeley.
