With his latest public complaints about the unjust practices of the Turkish Government against Turkey’s Christian minorities, the Ecumenical Patriarch has come out swinging. Unfortunately, he has no choice. Constantinople’s ethnic Greek population has almost vanished, due in large part to Turkey’s ruthless policies of seizing property, or preventing property from being passed on within families. The Patriarch’s criticism has invited a sharp response from Turkey’s Deputy Premier. It’s the same old attitude in Turkey, it seems: "Let us kill you, but don’t cry out while we’re doing it." But the Patriarch is just seeking the same rights as other citizens of his country. When State Department Acting Spokesman Tom Casey was asked on Monday for the U.S. reaction to the Turkish Government’s latest threat against the Patriarch, Mr. Casey said, "We certainly would encourage the Government of Turkey, and all governments, to provide the maximum opportunity for people to freely express their religious beliefs and opinions." The Archons should keep an
eye on this, and the U.S. should stand on its
democratic principles. |
