Gioles and Malta Scholarship Recipients Announced, $35,000 Awarded for 2005-2006 Academic Year

July 18, 2005

New York, NY - The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America has announced the recipients of 2005-06 scholarship awards from both the George and Naouma Gioles and the Katina John Malta Scholarship Programs.

Through the George and Naouma Gioles Scholarship Program, 8 scholarships totaling $11,000 have been awarded for the 2005-06 academic year. The scholarship amounts are from $1000 to $1500, and the awards were given to the following students: Pericles Abbasi (Chicago, IL), Peter Smith (Glastonbury, CT), Amanda Georgantas (Shorewood, IL), Demetri Arnaoutakis (Tampa, FL), Anthony Brinn (Brooklyn, NY), Alexandra Stevens (Franklin Square, NY), Angeliki Horiates (Pennsauken, NJ), and Jimmy O’Hare (Corona Del Mar, CA). The Gioles Scholarship Fund was established in 1997 with a generous gift in memory of George and Naouma Gioles. At least three scholarships are awarded on an annual basis to Greek Orthodox high school seniors or college students who are committed to serious study in a degree earning undergraduate program at an accredited college or university.

The Katina John Malta Scholarship Program offered a total of $24,000 in awards, which were given to the following 12 students: David Thatcher, Jr. (Merced, CA), Juliana Khouri (Cedar Rapids, IA), Pericles Abbasi (Chicago, IL), Peter Smith (Glastonbury, CT), Venetta Linas Paris (Chicago, IL), Yousef Al-Shanniek (Garrison, NY), Christos Bolos (Ogden, UT), Kelly Kotsatos (Warren, OH), Nicole Ritsi (St. Augustine, FL), Angeliki Horiates (Pennsauken, NJ), Jimmy O’Hare (Corona Del Mar, CA), and Amanda Georgantas (Shorewood, IL). These students were selected by the Scholarship Committee from the numerous applications received by the Archdiocese, and each received scholarships ranging from $1000 to $3000. The Katina John Malta Scholarship Fund is a scholarship program established in 2002 by means of a generous gift from the estate of Katina John Malta. The donation and the formation of the scholarship program has been done in recognition of the love Katina had for the Church and in honor of the desire she had to help others, especially children and youth. The program awards at least two scholarships of $2000 each academic year. The program is open to all Orthodox students of the jurisdictions of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA).

Applications and guidelines for the 2006-07 academic year will be made available by January 1, 2006 from the Office of the Chancellor, Scholarship Office, 10 East 79th Street, New York, NY 10021, with an application deadline of April 15, 2006. Applications will also be available on-line at
