BISHOP MERCURIUS OF ZARAISK TOOK PART IN PRONUNCIATION AND EPISCOPAL CONSECRATION OF ARCHIMANDRITE INGATI (PUNIN) TO BISHOP OF VYAZEMSK, VICAR OF SMOLENSK DIOCESE

According to the decision of Holy Patriarch and Holy Synod of April 20, 2005 hegumen Ignati (Punin), cleric of Smolensk diocese, was elected Bishop of Vyazemsk, vicar of Smolensk diocese.

On May 2, 2005, at the Dormition Cathedral of Smolensk, upon the blessing of His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Aleksy II, the Metropolitan of Smolensk and Kaliningrad Kirill elevated hegumen Ignatii into the rank of archimandrite.

The ceremony of pronunciation of archimandrite Ignati to the Bishop of Vyazemsk took place on July 6, 2005 at the Church of all Saints of Russia, that is a Patriarchal and Synod residence.

Prior to the ceremony His Holiness Patriarch Aleksy II conducted a moleben at the St. Nicholas Church in Tolmachi located on the grounds of the State Tretyakov Art Gallery, where the wonder-working icon of Mother of God of Vladimir is held. The icon’s feast is celebrated on June 6th.

Among the present at the service were: the rector of the church Archpriest Nikolai Sokolov, general director of Tretyakov Gallery V. Rodinov, parishioners and guests. After the service the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church congratulated everyone with the holiday.

The ceremony of the pronunciation of archimandrite Ignati was jointly performed by: Metropolitan Kirill of Smolensk and Kaliningrad, Metropolitan Clement of Kaluga and Borov, Archbishop Feofan of Berlin and Germany, Archbishop Victor of Tver and Kashinsk, Archbishop Aleksii of Oryehovo-Ziouyevsk, Bishop Mercurius of Zaraisk, Bishop Feofan of Stavropolsk and Vladikavkaz, Bishop Seraphim of Baltic, Bishop Hilarion of Vienna and Austria, and Bishop Mark of Yegorovo.

On July 7, 2005 the holiday of holy Forerunner and Baptist John, His Holiness Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Aleksy II celebrated Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of Christ the Savior.

After the liturgy the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church headed the ordination of archimandrite Ignatii (Punin) to Bishop of Vyazemsk vicar of Smolensk diocese.

His Holiness was co-served by Metropolitan Juvenaly of Krutitsk and Kolomna, Metropolitan Kirill of Smolenks and Kaliningrad, Metropolitan Clement of Kaluga and Borov, Archbishop Feofan of Berlin and Germany, Archbishop Victor of Tver and Kashinsk, Archbishop Pantheleimon of Maikop and Adygei, Archbishop Yevgenii of Vereisk, Archbishop Aleksii of Oryehovo-Ziouyevsk, Bishop Mercurius of Zaraisk, Bishop Feofhan of Stavropolsk and Vladikavkaz, Bishop Seraphim of Baltic, Bishop Hilarion of Vienna and Austria, Bishop Feofilakt of Bryansk and Sevsk, Bishop Mark of Yegorovo.

Among the guest were Governor of the District of Smolensk V.N. Maslov, chancellor of the Smolensk District Duma V.I. Anisimov, chancellor of Smolensk Residents Sobor V.D. Golichev, Deputy Chief of Education Department of the Smolensk District T.P. Dovgii, many of pilgrims and visitors of Smolensk.
