WONDERWORKING ICON OF THE MOTHER OF GOD OF SITKA IN ST. NICHOLAS PATRIARCHAL CATHEDRAL OF NEW YORK CITY

Upon the agreement of the Administrator of the Patriarchal parishes in the USA Bishop of Zaraisk Mercurius and Bishop of Sitka, Anchorage and Alaska Nikolai, and blessing of the His Beatitude, Metropolitan of all America and Canada Herman, the Wonderworking Icon of the Mother of God of Sitka will visit the St. Nicholas Patriarchal Cathedral in New York on October 16, 2005.

Bishop Mercurius and Bishop of Alaska Nikolai will concelebrate the Divine Liturgy. Following the Liturgy, a moleben with singing of the akathist will be held before the wonderworking icon.

The Icon of the Mother of God of Sitka is kept at the St. Michael the Archangel Cathedral of Sitka, Alaska. It is considered one of the most celebrated and cherished icons of the Theotokos in North America.

The authorship of this icon is attributed to Vladimir Lukitch Borovikovsky (1758-1826). He was a protιgι of Empress Ekaterina II and taught at the Academy of Art at the capital of Russian Imperia - St. Petersburg. Being well known for his portrait work, V.L. Borovokovsky created a number of icons for the infamous the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan in St. Petersburg.

The icon is written in style of Mother of God of Kazan, its dimensions are 92 x 45 centimeters (36 x 17 inches), and it is dressed in silver framing. This wonderworking icon is held in a special honored place on the north side of the iconostas.

This reflection of the Theotokos is a benevolent gift from employees of Russian American company. The donation was made in 1850, two years prior the completion of the Cathedral. The icon of the Mother fo God of Sitka is considered wonderworking.
