Historic significance of Vidovdan

Remarks by Prof. Dusan Korac

The Serbian Orthodox Church and its faithful commemorate Vidovdan by holding a memorial service for Holy Prince Lazar and the Serb Christian martyrs who perished in the battle against the Ottomans on Kosovo Field (Polje) in 1389.

The Serbs and their fellow Christian allies defended Kosovo Field not only the frontiers of their own territory and lives of their own people, but at the risk of losing their national independence, they also defended the interests and security of Christian Europe.  It is questionable whether the history of Europe would have been the same without the Battle of Kosovo and the sacrifice of the Serbian nation as evident of the celebrations in Western capitals after news spread that the Serbs halted the Ottoman advance into Christian Europe.
