Archbishop Demetrios, we are told, personally interceded with the Federation of Hellenic Societies of Greater New York to cancel a press conference his opponents at the Transfiguration Church in Corona, Queens had scheduled at the Stathakion Center in Astoria two Thursdays ago. The case is reminiscent of other times, when authorities – like Nixon, for instance – would indirectly, and even directly, threaten subordinates or organizations over which they exercised some measure of influence and bend them to their will. Quite unfortunately, the Federation went along with this, but it is still a major mistake on the part of Demetrios – and the Federation. It is almost shocking that the Archbishop of America would suggest a gag order to prevent the other side from being heard. Rather than gagging opposing arguments, it would be better if the Archdiocese offers more of its own.
