GREEK AMBASSADOR GEORGE SAVVAIDES TO RECEIVE HONORARY DOCTOR OF HUMANITIES DEGREE AT 63RD COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES OF HELLENIC COLLEGE/HOLY CROSS

Brookline, MA - Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology will honor Greek Ambassador George Savvaides with an Honorary Doctor of Humanities degree at the 63rd commencement exercises to be held on the Brookline campus on Saturday, May 21. Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, President of the College made the announcement following a decision by the Board of Trustees, stating "It is a great honor for our school to present this Honorary Degree to such a dedicated statesman and career diplomat who has served his country with such distinction and who has worked tirelessly to promote the virtues of Hellenism wherever his career has taken him." Ambassador Savvaides will deliver the Commencement Address to graduates.

Mr. Savvaides was appointed Greek Ambassador to the United States in 2002. Prior to that, he served from 2000 to 2002 as the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Greece, the highest post at the Ministry for a career official. From 1996 to 2000, Ambassador Savvaides was the Permanent Representative of Greece to NATO.

Born in Athens in 1945, Ambassador Savvaides received both his Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Political and Economic Sciences from the University of Athens. He then received a Master of Laws degree from Harvard University Law School in 1978. Mr. Savvaides’ diplomatic career is extensive and includes an early post as Boston’s Consul from 1976 to 1979. Following a promotion to Second Secretary, he served as Consul General of Greece in Skopje, formerly Yugoslavia. For many years, he served in the Greek Permanent Delegation to NATO in Brussels, before receiving his first ambassadorial promotion in 1991 as Head of the Cyprus Section within the Department of Bilateral Relations with Turkey and Cyprus.

Hellenic College/Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology is the only fully accredited Christian Orthodox undergraduate liberal arts college, graduate center for Orthodox higher education, and Greek Orthodox seminary in America. Hellenic College serves liberal arts minded students with an undergraduate curriculum of professional preparation grounded in Christian Orthodox values as well as Religious Studies program designed to prepare students who will continue their graduate studies at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Theological School. The schools are located at 50 Goddard Avenue in Brookline, Massachusetts.
