To the Editor: There is no doubt that Archbishop Iakovos had a great impact not only on the Church, but also throughout the nation. I had the honor of meeting him many times, and of serving a term on the Archdiocesan Council during his tenure. The most memorable recollections are when he came to Hawaii in the early 1960’s during my years there. He was traveling by himself en route to Japan. He took time out to celebrate the Divine Liturgy for a fledgling Greek Orthodox community. After the service, I asked him how many times since he was ordained a bishop had he celebrated the Divine Liturgy without any other clergy. "This was the first time," he replied. His efforts after that visit led to the establishment of the first Eastern Orthodox Church in the state of Hawaii. During his next visit to Hawaii, in a conversation about many issues, he said that "fanaticism is bad, even in religion." With the state of affairs in our nation today, how prophetic his comment was. His memory will be eternal. Respectfully submitted, |
