JERUSALEM Apr 24 (Associated Press)- Dozens of Palestinians heckled the Greek Orthodox Patriarch in the Holy Land, Eireneos, as he led the Palm Sunday procession, demanding his resignation and holding up signs reading "Shame on you." Police said protesters also threw empty water bottles.
The Palestinians want to establish their future capital in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured from Jordan in the 1967 Mideast war. News of the land sale, first revealed in the Israeli daily Maariv in March, sparked an uproar among Palestinian Christians who accused the Patriarch of betraying the Palestinian cause. During Sunday's protest, some 200 faithful gathered outside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the basilica marking the traditional site of Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. As the patriarch emerged from the church at the head of the Palm Sunday procession, protesters whistled and held up signs reading "Shame on you" and "No to traitors." Israeli police tried to clear a path for the patriarch, scuffling with some of the protesters. Police said some in the crowd threw empty bottles. Church officials have said they are investigating the allegations but have yet to reveal what they discovered. A land sale to Jews in east Jerusalem, while legal, would be seen as a betrayal to Palestinians. Israel has said it would not relinquish east Jerusalem, which it annexed to its capital after 1967.
