The eulogies of Archbishop Christodoulos of Athens and Metropolitan Methodios of Boston for the late Archbishop Iakovos set them apart from almost everyone. Among all the speakers, they were the ones who most richly illustrated the personality and accomplishments of Iakovos, as the power of their words was eloquently expressed with passion and sincerity. These were the two clergymen who did their best to do justice to the great man lying before them. Senator Paul Sarbanes of Maryland and New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg also delivered memorable eulogies, and Senator Sarbanes was visibly moved. But Christodoulos’ eulogy had the force of an oration of Pericles, all things being equal, and Methodios spoke with immense love and admiration for a man he knew and served so well. Methodios even went a few steps further than that. He proved to be the guardian of the community’s conscience, calling Iakovos the greatest churchman of the 20th Century. On top of that, he made a very telling statement in his eulogy which is being widely discussed widely among the clergy and distinguishes Methodios as a real leader: "(Iakovos) was patient and understanding, intolerant only of those who enshroud their true selves beneath the mantle of false humility." |
