It was heartbreaking to observe the scene in a large courtroom in Queens, New York this past Wednesday: On one side, there were about 70 parishioners from the Corona community, people who should have been at their jobs or others places at the time, and on the other side, congregated in a conclave, a few priests headed by the Chancellor of the Archdiocese Bishop Savvas, who looked as unhappy being there as could be expected. Their being summoned by a court was the singular most obvious proof of a system-wide breakdown that we have watching for quite some time. It signals the inability of the Archdiocese to exercise its authority while, at the same time, taking into consideration the views of parishioners who are vigorously fighting for their rights. It is truly a sad day when members of a parish failing to find a solution to the issues dividing them seek remedy and justice in a court of law. In a way, it brings us back to the days when the divisions within the Church were so great that communities would split and open churches, one next to the other. We have expressed the view on more than one occasion that the situation in Corona would get out of hand. We have also argued that the latest steps taken by the Archdiocese, instead of solving the issues, added fuel to the fire. Today we are in the courts. Where will we be tomorrow? |
