COPTIC LEADER URGES CALM and PATIENCE,IN LIGHT OF UNANSWERED QUESTIONS

Jersey City, NJ-March 6, 2005: Dr. Monir Dawoud, acting president of the American Coptic Association has issued the following response to questions that remain unanswered subsequent to the arrest and arraignment of two suspects in the murders of Hossam Armanious, his wife Amal Garas, and their daughters Sylvia and Monica.

“Although the Coptic Community is relieved that those who are accused of committing this barbaric crime have been apprehended, there are still questions that continue to plague us. For instance:

Ø If this was simply a robbery that went bad, why were all four family members, including 8 year old Monica, butchered in the same brutal way, their throats slit like animals?
Ø Did a loving father allow his children to be tortured and killed as he withheld his ATM card’s “PIN” number?
Ø If “greed” was indeed the sole motive, why was jewelry worth at least $3000, the same amount the ATM card netted, not stolen, too?”

“To those in our community who harbor doubts, I urge you to be calm and patient. Have faith in the American system of justice. This is not Egypt where Copts are routinely persecuted for practicing Christianity.”

“In the coming week, I hope to meet with Jersey City authorities in an effort to find answers so that our community can put this tragedy behind us and begin the healing process.“

“I want to thank Hudson County Prosecutor De Fazio, Mayor Healy, the FBI and all those who are working so hard on the Armanious case. We pray that Hossam, Amal, Sylvia, and Monica will rest in peace.”
