The Ecumenical Patriarchate acted wisely in agreeing to the selection of Bishop Gerasimos as the new Metropolitan of San Francisco. In complying with customary procedures governing such matters, the Patriarchate has gone a long way in proving that it is determined to act in accordance with the charter it granted to the Church in America. Meanwhile, it is becoming widely known that His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios of America lobbied hard and unsuccessfully for his colleagues to elect Archdiocesan Chancellor Bishop Savas of Troas. That the Archbishop failed to convince the majority of the Holy & Sacred Synod of the Mother Church to support his choice is a disturbing sign: either Bishop Savas was a bad choice, which the Archbishop should have avoided trying to make, or His Eminence does not enjoy the necessary level of confidence among the majority of his fellow Bishops. In either case, something is wrong: Having a weak leader for our Church here should be cause for concern to all because it will only magnify the problems we are facing, instead of resolving them. Lets hope Archbishop Demetrios can reverse this trend.
