Recent events in the Church of Greece should serve as a wake up call to our own church in America , as well. As we have being reporting for the past couple of weeks, the Church in Greece has been hit not by a storm, but by a tsunami of scandals involving clergyman.

This is the time for us to clean up our own house, too, before the situation evolves into an open crisis.

We are not arguing that the situation in our Church is as bad as it appears to be in Greece. Not by a long shot. Nonetheless, it is far from satisfactory here.

In today’s environment, even a small problem could look ten times worse than it is, and the collateral damage could be many times greater than it would otherwise have to be.

Archbishop Demetrios still has the time – even though it is evaporating fast – to fix what is broken; to change what is not performing up to standards; and to solve long simmering problems.

The crisis consuming the Church of Greece should be considered an opportunity in disguise; an opportunity for us to examine our own problems here; an opportunity to learn from others mistakes before we make the same or worse mistakes.

So let’s seize the day and grab hold of this opportunity. Our decision to cover events in Greece should, among other things, be interpreted as a genuine effort to keep our community informed, not as a pointing of fingers at others’ problems.

We should listen to the sound of the bell tolling and calling us to action.
