Boston Metropolis Camp Renamed Saint Methodios Faith and Heritage Center

By Theodore Kalmoukos
Special to The National Herald

BOSTON – During a joint meeting held recently by the Boston Metropolis Council and the Camp-Retreat Center Committee, it was unanimously decided to formally name the Retreat Center in Contoocook, New Hampshire the "St. Methodios Faith & Heritage Center.’

The Metropolis Council also announced official plans to construct a Retreat House consisting of 42 rooms overlooking the lake on the grounds of the Faith & Heritage Center.

George Behrakis, chairman of the St. Methodios Faith & Heritage Center and its greatest benefactor, unveiled the architectural plans for the new facility and reported on several meetings he chaired with the architect (Yervant Nahikian of Hooksett, New Hampshire) and other members of the Greek Orthodox Community involved in the construction. Mr. Behrakis expressed the hope that "the faithful throughout the Metropolis will generously donate to the fundraising drive which will commence shortly."

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the project will take place in late spring or early summer.

During the meeting, extensive reports were presented on the Boston Metropolis’ various ministries. Two members of the Metropolis Council, George Kalambokis, from the Annunciation Cathedral in Boston, and Frances Levas, from the Archangels Church in Watertown, were unanimously chosen to co-chair the Metropolis Fellowship of Orthodox Stewards program. FOS donates funds on a yearly basis to the Boston Metropolis to help support its ministries.

The National Herald has written extensively about the 200-acre property, with its 40 buildings including a large chapel in honor of St. George and a private lake, in the past.

The facility was purchased in 1998. Since then, it has welcomed thousands of young people from throughout New England, the United States and the world, who have enjoyed a religious and cultural camping experience on its grounds.

Many Greek Orthodox faithful have contributed towards the Camp over the years. The Behrakis family has donated almost $1.5 million dollars.
