Now that the Year 2004 has drawn to a close, it is time for us to not only wish each other a prosperous and healthy New Year. In light of sobering events and the tremendous power of Nature, it is time for us to humble ourselves before, and draw closer to, God by reaching out to others in need.

In our Greek Orthodox faith and tradition, there is an important hymn: "Kyrie ton dynameon… Lord of the powers, be with us. For in times of distress, we have no other help but You. Lord of the powers, have mercy on us."

With wives losing their husbands, husbands their wives, parents their children and children their parents, it is an appropriate prayer.
