GREEK ORTHODOX THEOPHANIA (EPIPHANY)

The Holy Metropolis is pleased to announce that the blessing of the waters on the Great and Holy Feast of Theophania (Epiphany) 2005 will again occur at the South Street Seaport, in New York City.

On
Wednesday January 19, 2005, following Divine Liturgy at the Cathedral of St. Markella, Archbishop PAVLOS, the Metropolitan of America, will lead a procession of clergy and faithful to the seaport where he will conduct the service to blessing the waters of our great city. He will complete the blessing by casting a Cross into the icy waters. This symbolizes the baptism of Christ in the Jordan at the hands of St. John the Baptist. Dozens of young men will dive into the harbor waters hoping to reach the Cross first and return it to the Archbishop. Last year, Angelo Pippis reached the Cross first and handed it to the Archbishop as the other divers hoisted him upon their shoulders. Mr. Pippis will be among this year’s divers.

This ancient and holy Greek Orthodox Christian ritual will again be witnessed by the people of
New York City through the cooperation of the local civil authorities, as was done since the time of the Emperors in Constantinople.

The Holy Metropolis invites all to come witness this glorious and joyful Holy Tradition together with the clergy and faithful from the Cathedral. It is expected that the solemn procession to the seaport will begin at 1 P.M. from the corner of Water and Fulton Streets on
Wednesday, January 19, 2005.

Buses from the Cathedral in
Astoria will be available with a required reservation. For directions by public transportation or automobile, contact the Cathedral.
