PM Campaigning for Greek Orthodox Patriarch

(IsraelNN.com) Metropolitan Irineos I, elected Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem despite Israeli objections, will have the support of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in the government vote approving of his appointment to the quasi-political post. According to Arutz Sheva correspondents, the Prime Minister will be holding a series of meetings in the coming days with ministers who are opposed to recognizing the official Greek Orthodox church appointment due to the patriarch’s pro-PLO sentiments. Irineos had promised to gift lands held by the church in Jerusalem to PLO leader Yasser Arafat.

The Greek Orthodox church is thought to be the richest church in Israel, holding many properties around Jerusalem and Bethlehem, including some of the most expensive land in the capitol.
