Each year at this time, people of Christian heritage and faith are granted the opportunity to spend time with their family and friends, and to increase their charitable activities, simply because it’s Christmas. The spirit of the Christmas season pervades human consciousness, conscience and activity everywhere, even among non-Christians. It is a time to give, and it is a time to receive. It is also a time to seriously reflect on the immense sacrifice our parents and grandparents, and how hard they worked to make life easier for their children, and to humble ourselves before them with genuine gratitude and respect. At press time, we ran across a story in the Empire State Association of Public Accountants Newsletter (December 2004 issue): "A Greek restaurant owner in Lowell had his own bookkeeping system. He kept his accounts payable in a cigarbox on the left-hand side of his cash register, his daily cash returns in the cash register, and his receipts for paid bills in another cigarbox on the right. When his youngest son graduated as an accountant, he was appalled by his father’s primitive methods. ‘I don’t know how you can run a business that way,’ he said. ‘How do you know what your profits are?’ – ‘Well son,’ the father replied, ‘when I got off the boat from Greece, I had nothing but the pants I was wearing. Today, your brother is a doctor. You are an accountant. Your sister is a speech therapist. Your mother and I have a nice car, a city house, and a country home. We have a good business, and everything is paid for. So, you add all that together, subtract the pants, and there’s your profit.’ We would like to dedicate this issue to our hardworking, cigarbox-keeping immigrant forebears, and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and joyous holiday season, full of good health and cheer.
