Dysfunctional Charity

Matushka Barbara Bruce

It always is the season

To give money to the poor

But some will find a reason

To withhold their coin, for sure.

"Because he might buy moonshine -

Some vanilla or mouthwash,

Or a keg of cheap red wine...

He's a bum... a drunken lush."

"Because - she might just shoot up

Heroin or snort cocaine -

Buy tobacco or some grass

To escape her mental pain."

"Whereas they're simply lazy

They just need to get a job!

It's absolutely crazy -

And compels my soul to sob."

"How can there be so many

Starving people on the street?

I'll toss this man a penny,

And go buy MYSELF a treat."

"For I have done my duty,

Thank God, I'm not like all those...!

MY soul is full of beauty,

For I've lightened someone's woes."

"I'm such a special person,

More should be like me, I wish!"

ALL the good deeds I have done...

Thank goodness, I'M not selfish!"

The above is a tongue-in-cheek poem. Remember, we don't really KNOW what they will do with our alms, but it will provide them some comfort in their cheerless world.

Be careful that we do not give alms for show, glorifying ourselves like the Pharisee. We can give alms in a departed person's name, in fact, this is a most important thing to do. Alms can extricate the soul of a sinner even from the depths of hell. The Alms Angel stands perpetually before God's Throne, and sings of all the alms that are being given.

Perhaps by lovingly, unjudgingly, giving those in need - alms, and looking into their eyes and kindly talking "with" them, even for only a minute, we might prevent someone from stealing for their needs.

The Widow's Mite, was given from her NEEDS, not from her surplus!

"Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy."  - St. Matthew 5:7

God invites us to do this... "For some have entertained angels, unawares!"
