TBILISI, GEORGIA [OCA Communications] – His Grace, Bishop Seraphim of Ottawa and Canada and vice chairman of the Orthodox Church in America’s Department of External Affairs and Interchurch Relations and the Very Rev. David Brum, secretary to His Beatitude, Metropolitan Herman, represented His Beatitude and the OCA at the consecration of the newly constructed Holy Trinity Cathedral here November 22-23, 2004. The massive cathedral, the nation’s largest, had been under construction for several years and was built to commemorate the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Our Lord. It is surmounted by a distinctive Georgian cupola and cross. Representatives of 12 of the world’s 15 autocephalous Orthodox Churches concelebrated the consecration Liturgy with His Holiness and Beatitude, Patriarch-Catholicos Ilia and members of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Church. Also attending the consecration Liturgy were Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili and numerous other political, civic, and religious dignitaries. Earlier in 2004, Metropolitan Herman made his first official visit to the Church of Georgia, at which time the invitation to participate in the consecration was extended.
