Eastern Orthodox Scouting Committee to Award Three Scholarships in 2005

FREEPORT, NY [OCA Communications] – The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting [EOCS] recently announced it will award three national scholarships to qualifying Orthodox scouts in 2005.

One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded, as will a $500 award. A second $1,000 scholarship is being funded by the Russian Children’s Welfare Society, Inc. for a scout of Russian descent.

To qualify for a scholarship, a scout must be a registered active member of a boy or girl scout unit and an Orthodox parish who has earned the Eagle Scout or Gold awards and the Alpha-Omega award. He or she must have demonstrated practical citizenship in his or her parish, school unit, and community and be a senior enrolled in an accredited US high school. Four letters of recommendation, from his or her parish, school, community, and unit leaders respectively, must also be submitted with his or her application. Scholarships will be awarded to those who best meet EOCS’s qualifications and not on a need basis.

Applications, which must be submitted by May 1, 2005, may be obtained by contacting Mr. George N. Boulukos, EOCS chairman, 862 Guy Lombardo Ave., Freeport, NY 11520.
