SYOSSET, NY [OCA Communications] -- On Sunday, October 3, parishes of the Orthodox Church in America will again take special collections for the victims of the recent hurricanes that stretched from Florida to Pennsylvania. "During the past few weeks, reports on damage to OCA parishes and the homes of faithful have been received at the Chancery office," according to the Very Rev. John Matusiak, OCA Communications Director. "Donations from parishes will assist these communities and faithful, among others." In Port St. Lucie, FL, the Very Rev. Ernesto Rios, rector of Saint James Mission, reported that four parish families sustained serious damage to their homes, while the home of the Rev. Romulus Bar, Brooksville, FL, was completely destroyed during one of the hurricanes. Flooding in Pennsylvania seriously damaged the basement of Holy Cross Church, Williamsport, PA, and its rectory, according to the Very Rev. Daniel Kovalak, rector. The Very Rev. George York, rector of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin Church, Carnegie, PA, also reported serious damage to his church. In Florida, where Hurricanes Charley, Frances, and Jeanne made landfall, a number of families in OCA parishes have experienced tremendous loss as a result of the storms. While thousands of dollars of on-line contributions have been received through the OCA's Florida Hurricane Relief Fund, parish communities are being encouraged to take special collections on the first Sunday of October, which will provide assistance as additional reports of damage and loss are received.
