Archbishhop Calls Upon OmogeniaTo Support Hellenic College/Holy Cross
BOSTON.- Archbishop Demetrios of America made an open plea through The National Herald to the omogenia (the Greek-American community) “to support our (Holy Cross) Theological School with all our strength and in any way we can.” Speaking to Herald after the Vesper Service of the feast of the Holy Cross, which marked the official beginning of the new academic year, Archbishop Demetrios, said “we should continue our efforts constantly through the power of the cross and God’s presence in achieving the best possible degree of ethos, behavior and educational level in witnessing Orthodoxy in our world.” The Archbishop also said that “this is a school which really consists of a unique element of strength and it is the jewel of the omogeneia.” According to the president of the school, Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, the freshman class this Fall “has 46 students and Hellenic College 29 –30.” Fr. Triantafilou said that both schools have “full time equivalence of about 205, but with the students who are here as special students, the number is close to 228.” Fr. Triantafilou also said that “it is our hope that we are faithful to God and to the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church and we are able to teach the values of our Hellenic Culture and our Orthodox Faith in its truism and that our students existentially believe in these things, not just in a shallow way learning a few words in Greek and some history. We want them to be Greek Orthodox evangelists.” Fr. Triantafilou expressed his high regard for the omogenia, saying “we need to respect the omogenia who are sacrificing themselves for this school to exist, and the only way to do that is by demanding from our students excellence.” Hellenic College Dean Lily Makrakis told the Herald that “Hellenic College is doing very well, We have this year six to seven new professors for the teaching of the Greek language, Greek literature, Orthodoxy, business management and other disciplines.” Dean Makrakis also said that Hellenic College has in total over 90 students. The first year class “has 28 students, 16 of whom are enrolled in the Religious Studies program, 1 in classics, 4 elementary education, 4 in human development and 2 in business management.” The Herald has learned that the actual number of first year students of the School of Theology is 44, out of which 18 are the seminarians of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, meaning that they are enrolled in the Master of Divinity program which leads to the holy priesthood. This year, four students have come from Greece through the one-year student exchange program funded by the government of Greece.
Archbishop
Demetrios, in his sermon, made reference to the
symbolism of the cross, and he mentioned the three
year anniversary of the September 11, 2001
terrorist attacks against America, as well as the
recent tragic helicopter accident in Mouth Athos,
which took the life of Patriarch of Alexandria
Petros, along with 16 members of his entourage of
hierarchs, clergy and laymen. |
