Greece sends aid to Beslan

Four tons of humanitarian aid, sent by the Greek government in cooperation with the Orthodox Church, arrived at Vladikavkaz airport yesterday to be distributed among the Beslan community, where over 350 people were killed in an attack by pro-Chechen terrorists on a local school.

The aid, which includes medicine and school and medical equipment, was flown to Russia aboard a Greek air force cargo plane. The move was instigated by the Greek Foreign Ministry with the help of “Solidarity,” an organization affiliated to the Greek Orthodox Church.

The Greek government also sent a telegram of condolence to the family of Yiannis Kanidis, the 74-year-old ethnic Greek teacher who was killed during Friday’s massacre.

“His name will remain etched on our hearts and his actions will serve as an example to future generations,” said the deputy foreign minister for Greeks abroad, Panayiotis Skandalakis. Kanidis, who taught at the school, is said to have refused an offer by the terrorists to release him, in order to stay with his pupils.
