Syndesmos Orthodox and Roman Catholic youth exchange, ItalyA youth exchange organised by Syndesmos took place 5 – 13 June 2004, gathering 25 young people from the Orthodox and Roman Catholic traditions, and hosted at the ecumenical Monastery of Bose, Italy. The initiative for this event was taken during the XVII Syndesmos general assembly (Albania, July 2003) in which delegates confirmed their commitment to the ecumenical dialogue. Indeed, this was the first youth event organised by Syndesmos with a significant non-Orthodox participation for many years. The focus of the seminar was the question of Christian unity, and contributions were made from speakers from both the Orthodox and Catholic perspectives. A significant point in the programme was the open discussion with the founder and Prior of the Monastery of Bose, Fr Enzo Bianchi, widely respected by Orthodox and Catholics alike for his spiritual insight and writings. Overall the youth seminar opened a window into the respective Christian traditions and was a first step towards building good personal friendships and stronger mutual understanding. Worship formed the backdrop of the seminar: on some days participants attended the morning and evening prayers of the community, whilst on other occasions they gathered for prayers following, alternately, the Orthodox and Catholic traditions. There was also the opportunity to celebrate the Orthodox liturgy and the Catholic Mass during the course of the programme. For a number of years now representatives from Syndesmos have participated in an annual International Conference organised by the Monastery of Bose. Through these conferences a good link has been established between Syndesmos and the community, which this youth seminar has built on. Syndesmos is very grateful to the monastery of Bose for their generous hosting of this event and for the brotherly love, which they show towards Orthodox youth.
