5-hour service gets priest in trouble

A Romanian clergyman who subjected his parishioners to a five-hour service is getting his comeuppance.

Authorities ordered Agapie Aurel Rusu to live alone on bread and water for a month.

The Romanian Orthodox priest reportedly officiated over the lengthy funeral service to get revenge on the deceased's relatives, who had wanted another clergyman to preside.

Rusu extended his sermon with poetry and forays into politics, history and a discussion of heart surgery.

"I just couldn't hang on in there," one of the funeral guests told the Jurnalul newspaper. "I don't remember much of what the priest kept talking about."

Zenovie Mosoiu, a spokesman for the Orthodox Church in Brasov, said: "It was a little too much for a funeral service to last five hours. In normal conditions such a service cannot take more than an hour with the priest's sermon included."
