Archdiocese Releases Proposed Budgets

BOSTON - The delegates of the upcoming 37th Clergy Laity Congress of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, will be called to approve the operating revenues and budgets for the next two years. The Clergy Laity  Congress is scheduled to take place at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City from July 25-30, where they will approve the 2005 and 2006 budgets, which amount to $16,254,000 and $16,340,975 respectively. The specific budgets for the various offices and departments are the following: The budget for Archbishop Demetrios’ office totals $599,200 each year; The budget for former Archbishop Iakovos has been set at the amount of $298,100 per year; For the Office of the Secretariat of Archbishop Demetrios the budget has been set at the amount of $217,800 annually, while for the Department of Correspondence, the budget amount is $172,725 per year; The Office of Administration, headed by Jerry Demitriou, is budgeted $401,500 annually; The Chancellor’s Office gets $312,300; The Department of Finance, $515,700; Information and Technology $438,500 for the year 2005 and $442,200 for the year 2006; The Office of Internal Assessment and Evaluation totals $100,000 per year;

The cost for Independent Auditing, Accounting and Consulting has been set at $100,000 per year; Legal Fees $100,000; Legal Settlements, $500,000; Archbishop Demetrios’ residence $89,000; General and Administrative Services, $890,000; Archbishop Iakovos’ residence $44,100; Liability Insurance Programs and Expenses, $493,000. (It should be noted here that the insurance expense includes premiums paid for certain monasteries, without the monasteries reimbursing the Archdiocese); Archdiocesan Conferences, $60,000; Other Expenses, $17,500; Interest Expense, $225,000; and Dept. Reduction, $500,000.

The allocation for Hellenic College/Holy Cross has been set at $1.2 million per year. It must be noted here that the same amount has been allocated for Holy Cross the last ten years. The National Herald has learned that the president of Holy Cross is going to request that the allowance for the Theological School be increased from $1.2 million to $1.7 million per year. As the Herald has revealed in its past issues, the operating budget of the Theological School is in the range of $8 million. The proposed Archdiocesan budget allocates $225,700 for Greek Education, $77,000 for Interfaith education, and for Religious Education, $180,500 for the year 2005 and $185,500 for the year 2006. There is a second budget for the Department of Religious Education classified as DRE Operations, totaling $362,200 for the year 2005, and $439,000 for the year 2006. The amount budgeted for Youth Ministry is $538,200 and for the Ionian Village, $809,800.

The proposed budgets of the Archdiocesan District of New York and the eight Metropolises have been set as follows: Archdiocesan District, $264,200; Metropolis of New Jersey, $380,000; Metropolis of Chicago, $480,000; Metropolis of Boston, $330,000; Metropolis of San Francisco $331.000; Metropolis of Atlanta, $376,000; Metropolis of Pittsburgh, $284,000; Metropolis of Detroit, $300,000; Metropolis of Denver, $306,000.

The allocation for the retired Bishops has been set at $216,000 per year.

The annual Grant for the Ecumenical Patriarchate has been set at $500,000; for the Orthodox Missions Center, $60,000; Contributions to Religious Affiliates, $25,000; the Ecumenical Office-Interchurch Relations, $191,100.

Communications costs, totaling $1,738,100 are divided into the following categories: Public Affairs and Relations $239,000; Communications $317,000; Internet $247,000; Greek Orthodox Telecommunications $270,000; Orthodox Observer $663,400.

The budget for the Department of Stewardship amounts to $259,800; for the Department of Philanthropy, $175,100; Development Office, $142,300; Outreach and Evangelism, $142,350 for the year 2005 and $155,550 for 2006; Registry and Statistics, $92,900; the Archive Center, $67,100; and Clergy Assistance, $150,000.
