Cappella Romana to perform
LOS ANGELES - Cappella Romana has been invited to perform its program “Music of Byzantium: The Fall of Constantinople” at the Getty Center on Saturday, November 20, 2004, at 7:00pm. The evening's performance complements the new Getty exhibition Byzantium and the West on view September 14 through December 5, 2004, and is the same program that was given in April 2004 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York for its exhibit Byzantium: Faith and Power. This virtuosic program of 14th- and 15th-century musical works explores the co-existence and conflict between Greek and Western cultures in the Eastern Mediterranean during the twilight years of Byzantium. Byzantine chant, acclamations for the last emperor of Constantinople, and Latin ceremonial motets will be featured, plus two laments for the fall of Constantinople (1453): one by Manuel Chrysaphes, a singer in the Imperial Chapel of the last Byzantine Emperor, and the other a poignant work of Western polyphony by Guillaume Dufay. Similar to Cappella Romana's musical program, the Getty's Byzantium and the West exhibition explores the widespread influence of the Byzantine Empire on neighboring countries and the enduring legacy of its art. The exhibition features manuscripts that showcase the distinctive brilliance of Byzantine art and highlight the manner in which different cultures reacted to the artistic heritage of the Empire over time. Drawn primarily from the Getty's rich collection, the works on view dating from the 11th through the 17th centuries include bound manuscripts, leaves, and a painting. Founder and artistic director Alexander Lingas will conduct. Music from this program may be found on Cappella Romana's latest CD “Music of Byzantium,” available from Cappella Romana and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cappella Romana made its European debut in March 2004 at the Byzantine Festival in London, with concerts at Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Greek Cathedral of London, and St. Paul's Cathedral, where the ensemble performed to over 1,500. In April the ensemble made its New York debut at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York during the museum's major international loan exhibit “Byzantium: Faith and Power 1261-1557” as the final event of an international symposium. Two other concerts were presented by Yale University and Princeton University. Cappella Romana is a vocal chamber ensemble dedicated to combining passion with scholarship in its exploration of the musical traditions of the Christian East and West, with emphasis on early and contemporary music. Performing music of the Three Romes, its name is derived from the medieval concept of the Roman oikoumene (inhabited world), which included not only "Old" Rome and Western Europe but also "New Rome" (Constantinople) and "Third Rome" (Moscow) and its commonwealth of Slavic countries.
