FIRST-EVER CONFERENCE ON ORTHODOX SOCIAL MINISTRIES IN AMERICA On October 29-31, 2004, the International Orthodox Peace Fellowship will hold its 2004 North American Conference at St. Nicholas Ranch and Retreat Center. The conference, entitled “Salt of the Earth, Light of the World: Living the Similitudes in our Communities,” will be a symposium on Orthodox ministries of peacemaking, social outreach, and environmental stewardship. The conference will bring together Orthodox ministries that are working in these areas together with interested clergy and laypeople to discuss ways of developing a more dynamic and coordinated Orthodox social witness within the United States, beginning at the level of the local parish. This will be the first ever pan-Orthodox conference focusing on Orthodox ministries of peacemaking, social justice, and the environment to take place in the United States. A similar conference entitled “Orthodox Diakonia,” focusing on Orthodox social ministries in Europe, took place in Finland earlier this year. The theme of the conference centers on the Similitudes. The Similitudes are the words of Christ that immediately follow the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount: “You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world.” While the Beatitudes speak of the interior qualities of those who are awaiting the Kingdom of God, the Similitudes have particular reference to the way these characteristics are to be lived out in the world. The conference will focus on finding ways of living out our Orthodox faith within our local communities. The International Orthodox Peace Fellowship is a SCOBA-recognized association of Orthodox Christians seeking to apply the principles of the Gospel to situations of division and conflict, whether in the home, the parish, the local community, the work place, or at the national level, The Orthodox Peace Fellowship works for the conservation of God’s creation and especially of human life.
The
conference is open to both members and non-members
