The Clergy-Laity Congress in New York The Clergy-Laity Congress, which convenes every two years and is meant to represent the decision-making body of our Church, is scheduled to assemble in New York the last week of July. For decades, it was convened near the 4th of July so as to celebrate at the same time the independence of our nation. For technical reasons, this year it was moved further back. In prior years, especially under the leadership of Archbishop Iakovos, the Clergy-Laity Congress was a big event, with well-prepared delegates ready to make decisions about the issues affecting the Church.
We are just a
month-and-a-half-away and not much is heard about
this upcoming Congress. We consider the
Clergy-Laity an important democratic institution
of the Church and would hope that its value would
be enhanced even further and that its decisions
would be respected even more than they are now. |
