Regarding “The History of the Greek Orthodox Church in America”

Mr. James Golding
Editor of the Orthodox Observer
8 East 79th Street
New York New York, 10021

Almost one year has elapsed since The History of the Greek Orthodox Church in America by Professor Paul Manolis was officially presented in Athens on June 10, 2003 before an assembly of more than 250 academicians, political figures, and other distinguished guests.

This exceptional three volume compendium contains all the important documents pertaining to the establishment and history of our Archdiocese.    This work is the culmination of many years of laborious research and careful sifting of thousands of documents, manuscripts, articles and correspondence by Professor Manolis.  It is completely factual and objective without being encumbered by commentary or interpretation.  Unlike other histories of our Church in America, the reader is allowed to reach his own conclusions without being influenced by the author's interpretations of events which cannot help but reflect his own bias.

The immense value of this extraordinary publication to the life of our Church in America cannot be over emphasized.  Both former Arcbishop Iakovos and Patriarch Bartholomew have attested to its great significance.  It is therefore difficult to understand why there has been no mention of this momentous work in either the news columns or an editorial of the Orthodox Observer.  Certainly it is of equal if not greater importance than many of the matters which have either been reported in the Observer or have been the subject of its editorials during the past year.

It is inconceivable how or why the Orthodox Observer, as an important vehicle of communication in the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America, could ignore this immense contribution to the life of the Archdiocese.  I hope that as the Editor of the Orthodox Observer you will take whatever steps are necessary to rectify this grave omission.

   Very truly yours,

   Evan Alevizatos Chriss
