RELIGIOUS LEADERS ASK POWELL TO RESTART TALKS By Laurie Goodstein Washington, DC (NY Times) - A delegation of top religious leaders met Secretary of State Colin L. Powell and requested the appointment of a special presidential envoy to go to Jerusalem to restart peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians. The Christians in the delegation included two Roman Catholic cardinals, several evangelicals and leaders of the Greek Orthodox, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Episcopal, United Methodist and United Church of Christ and Disciples of Christ denominations. Jewish leaders represented Reform, Reconstructionist and Conservative branches, and Muslims included leaders of the Islamic Society of North America and the Council of Mosques. |
