Text of Letter by OCL President to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, Regarding Break in Communion with Church of Greece May 12, 2004
His All Holiness
Bartholomew Your All Holiness: Xristos Aneste - Christ Is Risen! We are deeply saddened and concerned that the Ecumenical Patriarchate has broken communion with the Orthodox Church of Greece and urge Your All Holiness to rescind this action immediately and restore unity and calm to our Holy Orthodox Church. For nearly a year, the people of Greece and Greek Orthodox throughout the world have witnessed with great pain the escalating and bitter controversy which has engulfed the Patriarchate and the Greek Church. This dispute has done much harm to our Churchs mission of love and salvation. Orthodox believers worldwide rightfully revere the Ecumenical Patriarchate as the spiritual center of our faith and as an ageless symbol of our Eucharistic Unity not as a continuing source of jurisdictional controversy and friction. This running dispute with the Church of Greece has undermined that confidence and respect and caused confusion and bewilderment among the faithful. It is our fervent hope that Your All Holiness, after prayerful thought and in the illumined spiritual tradition of the Ecumenical Patriarchate will reconsider this decision and reestablish proper relations with the Autocephalous Church of Greece. Yours in Christ,
Peter Haikalis,
PhD
