Letter from OCL President to National Archon Commander Limberakis, Regarding Break in Communion with Church of Greece and Purge of Archons May 12, 2004
Anthony J.
Limberakis, MD Dear Dr. Limberakis, Xristos Aneste - Christ is Risen! We are sure that the Archons are as deeply concerned as are Orthodox throughout the world over the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s decision to break communion with the autocephalous Orthodox Church of Greece. Because as Archons you enjoy a privileged relationship with the Patriarchate, we urge that you make every effort to reverse this unfortunate and divisive action. For nearly a year the faithful of the Orthodox world have witnessed with pain this escalating, highly public and bitter dispute between Athens and Istanbul. It has caused confusion, disunity and diminished the prestige and spiritual authority of the Patriarchate. It has been further aggravated by the Patriarchate’s continuing disregard for the traditions and rules of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. In this regard, we are also deeply concerned that the leadership of the Archons is attempting to purge those fellow Archons who are plaintiffs in a legal action asking that the Archdiocese and the Patriarchate to abide by established rules governing the Archdiocese. Such actions do no credit to the Archons and undermine the Patriarchate’s historic role as a symbol of spiritual unity for Orthodoxy. As protectors of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, it is incumbent on the Archons to ensure that it does not embark on ill-advised and divisive courses of action. Yours in Christ,
Peter Haikalis,
PhD
